KIAN

Kian was surprised that his cousin chose caution over gain, preferring to eliminate the threat rather than learning from Igor about the gods.

Kalugal had gone into archeology in the hopes of finding out more about their ancestors, and yet he was willing to give up on the chance to learn about them in exchange for safety.

Perhaps being a father had rearranged the guy's priorities, or maybe he'd always been cautious. After all, Kalugal had escaped discovery by his father for decades, and he wouldn't have been successful if he hadn't learned how to hide and fly under the radar, so to speak.

If he cared to be honest with himself, Kian had mixed feelings about inviting Kalugal to join their planning session, but he was starting to realize that Kalugal's swagger was misleading. When the stakes were high, Kalugal's approach was careful and levelheaded.

"Personally, I would love for Toven to compel Igor and get him to talk," Onegus said. "But only if we can do that safely. Otherwise, I would rather see him blown to pieces and sunk to the bottom of the ocean with all his knowledge."

Setting down his coffee mug, Toven turned to Kian. "As I said, I do not know if I can compel Igor even under ideal circumstances, but if we manage to capture him without exposing ourselves to too much risk, it's worth a shot. If I fail, Annani might give it a try. I don't know how strong her compulsion ability is, and neither does she, but I have a feeling that she's much more powerful than she realizes. After all, she's Ahn's daughter, and he was the strongest compeller among the Earthbound gods."

Kian's knee-jerk response was a vehement refusal to even consider letting his mother attempt that. "I am not letting Annani anywhere near Igor, not even via a video call. Even if we have him in chains and a muzzle on his mouth, I don't want him to know that Annani exists. It's an unacceptable risk for her and for the clan."

Phinas nodded in agreement. "I know this is above my pay grade, and I might be overstepping, but I feel I might be remiss if I don't, and this concerns all of us." He paused and looked at Kian.

Kian had no intention of overruling him. Phinas had good instincts, and his opinion was valuable. He had grown to respect the guy during this operation. Yamanu and Bhathian reported that his leadership and fighting skills were exceptional.

Successfully wooing the fearsome Jade was no small achievement either. He was also completely at ease during this meeting, twice now interjecting in a way that could be construed by some to undermine, or at least question, Kian.

That was not the case, of course. Kian welcomed discussion and appreciated all points of view, but most people were intimidated by him no matter how hard he tried to appear accommodating.

Not Phinas, though.

The credit was due to Kalugal, no doubt, who must have trained his subordinates to speak their minds freely.
